I'm very frustrated by the inability to insert YouTube video into these posts using the iPad. There are some great videos to go with this band, but you will have to search them out yourself. This is a strong pop album and is easy to enjoy with just one listen. Upbeat and peppy even when it is talking about break-ups and heartbreak. The draw back is this album should have come out in June so we could enjoy it all summer long. We'll see if the album has staying power or if it is so bright that it burns out quickly.

TJI: Cass McCombs

Cass McCombs - The Same Thing

I've tried posting this review three times now, but have had so many problems with blogpress and blogger on the IPad that it hasn't happened till now. This album would fit in great with the alt country of the 90's. This is Cass's second release (Wits End was the first) of the year and I wonder if he would have been better served making one great release instead of two good ones. Don't know the whole story but I guess it possible that the inspiration for these songs came after the first release. There are some great tracks here, like Same Thing which is posted above but also a few boring tracks. I would recommend downloading parts of each album and you'll be good to go.

I love the psychedelic garage music coming out of this Portland band. There is a kaleidoscope of sounds and layers. The lead singer has a weird voice that some how remains interesting and not annoying. Not a bad song on the album, Trying to Reach You and Fever Dreams will give you a taste. If you like it, get the whole meal.

Real Estate - Green Aisles
This is jangly guitar pop that is easy to listen to. There is nothing grating or confusing about the sound. The album is well recorded and it has a simple and dreamy sound that lends itself to listening while driving. The first single It's Real is one of the best tracks from the month of October.

Phantogram - Don't Move
Phantogram - 16 Years


Pleasant sound. Nice soft vocals (female and male), cool synths, beats, and sweet looping effects. The earth didn't shake when I listened to this album but I did listen till the end, which says something. Nightlife is a long EP at 7 tracks, but seems like the perfect length for an attention span these days. Don't Move is easily my favorite track, followed by Turning Into Stone.

Cheat Sheet #23 2011

Not a lot of explanation this week, but lots of music. Been gone at the beach and now heading out to Disney - Boss! Most of these tracks are older (2 weeks) but all are still worth a listen. Also seems to be a very subdued overall sound - I guess summer is coming to an end and we are getting ready for the cold days ahead. My wife thinks it is going to be an early fall.

Canucks with a nice little sound, has that 60's slow dance guitar to kick it off.

Best of the 2nd Quarter 2011 April -> June

Over halfway through 2011 and with the summer here I have had a little more time focus on music. April and May brought lots of great music and lots of new discoveries. That is always a busy music time of year as many bands like to follow up with new albums and tracks after SXSW. June was a little disappointing (or maybe I am just spending too much time stuck on Bon Iver) and July so far has been dry. Enjoy and let me know what your favorites were.

Cheat Sheet #21 2011

Sorry if this starts a little downbeat for you. I know it is summer, but these are the new tracks that are striking me just right and I also find happiness in sad music. My wife says that makes me weird, she is probably right (but I know there are others of you out there). If you don't want to hear the miserable tunes just skip forward to Santa Fe by Beirut.

The influences here are obvious so I'll skip that. You should also skip this if synthesizers and drum machines bother you. These tracks seem very different to me, but all of them work. "Hey Moon" to me is just beautiful (lyrics rarely matter, but here they hit me just right) the two other tracks are a weird kind of fun listen.

Lining up to be a year end favorite. In the past Beirut has never hit the mark with me. I think the sound was too eclectic and bounced all over the place. All the tracks I have heard from this new album seem gentler and well thought out.

Grand atmospheric sounding music. Reminds me of the Foals last album with guttural vocals. I have no clue what the lead singer is saying (it is English) but I know he is feeling it and as a result so am I. The music clearly sounds like a call to arms for someone, for me it just beckons to be played loud while I'm cleaning the house.

Teddy Bears - No More Michael Jackson source Magnet
A grab bag of sounds and styles but all of it up-beat. This is tongue in cheek electronic pop music from three Sweedish dudes who used to make heavy grindcore music. The album contains guest appearances all of the place from the likes of Flaming Lips, Cee-Lo, B-52s, Robyn, and B.O.B. It is possible this music is too happy for me.

Making funky experimental electronic music like it should be made. They got synths, midis, distorted guitars, drums, and lovely vocals. All hands on deck as there is lots of knob turning. I can remember when I thought electronic music was some how cheating - I'm retarded. It's all music, you just have to do what sounds good. This is like dirty hippie music for the electronic age.Great jam below to go with the mp3.

This is ear burning and brain melting music. The droning noise is very displacing and matches the lyrics perfectly. It is hard to listen to this at full volume, but I highly recommend. EMA seems to be genius. Apparently she has been honing her craft in earlier bands Amps For Christ and Gowns.Looks like I'll be busy this week checking them out. Amazon has her new album for $5.99 get it now.

Battles - Ice Cream source My Blog Cliche
I love the Battles and when I heard front man Tyondai Braxton left to pursue his solo projects I thought there is no way they could survive. I was wrong - this is great. The album will include rotating guest vocals including the likes of Gary Numan (Cars - see below). Saucy video to boot, but I prefer mint chocolate chip.

The first quarter of the year is over and it has been a good year in music so far. There have a been a few standout albums that I really go back to again and again:

Still absorbing the Generationals and Wye Oak and looking forward to TV On Radio, The Vaccines, Raveonettes, and Low. Radiohead was a little disappointing (by that I mean it didn't change my life), but with every listen I like it more, same with the Yuck album. So below is a great mix of early favorites for the year, although I picked some tracks simply because they were available. I personally like Dear Avery best off The Decemberists album and can't pick a favorite on P.J. Harvey or Destroyer. Time is of the essence and I don't have any. Busy with lacrosse last week even though we had two games rained out. This week I got two more coming up, but if time allows and I can get them posted I have a bunch of great tracks to bring in spring. Anybody have any suggestions for music that reminds them of spring and the changing weather? I avoided this when I first saw it posted on blogs because I didn't like the band name with the lower and upper case mix. Just didn't look like a band that takes them seriously. I was wrong - the music is the brain child of Merrill Garbus. She is weird and wacky but serious about making good music. It was the video below from NPR - All Songs Considered that sold me on the music

Yacht - Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire) from Everybody Taste
Hot off the blog presses, this track is a great play on the "The Roof Is On Fire" by Rock Master Scott & The Dynamic Three and signals that Yacht will still be around the blogosphere for another 6 months. Another sign they will be around is they are on the DFA label. Only listened to this once, but it sure is catchy.

Great pop music. If you like Peter, Bjorn, and John then you will be a fan of these guys. I am sure they will be making a splash at SXSW this week.

A throwback to 50's group and the summer jangle guitar that is so popular now. I know very little about this band except that they are on Fat Possum records that has been putting out lots of good bands this year. The only other tidbit is that lead man Sonny Smith did a project were he recorded 100 singles by fake bands or something.  Looks like I'll be busy looking into that this week.

Summer Camp - I Want You from Off the Radar
Thumping electro-beats (from Jeremy Warmsly) with a simple message from female singer Elizabeth Sankey. This UK duo is hot right now. I really like this song. It is very repetitive, but just when I start getting bored a little something changes to keep me hooked. No date or name on album yet. A lot of these tracks are being thrown out there, because everyone will be down at SXSW trying to hype themselves.

Dum Dum Girls - He Gets Me High from You Set the Scene
Some serious contrast to the previous track. This one is all balls from four chicks who rock. I love the sweet vocals in contrast to the heavy guitar distortion. The EP also includes a great cover of the The Smiths - There Is A Light.

Arctic Monkeys - Brick By Brick from Culture Bully
I hear the Queens of the Stone Age and The Kinks. I like when this track slows down and kicks back in. Think I need to listen to this at max volume while driving. It took me two listens to realize I love the direction that the Arctic Monkeys have gone in, Humbug was a pretty good album, here is to hoping for even more with this next one.

Lacrosse season has started, so the little time I had is now gone. The only real time I am getting to listen to music is driving to and from work. Thank goodness for great music blogs like the ones listed below that keep me up to date. This is a great week of new and eclectic music. New band to me and this is the first track I have ever heard. Seems like lots of people have been jocking them and expecting a break out. This next album may do it. This is 100% pop. So pop you might think they were Swedish, but they are from LA. The female singer in the band is the great-grand daughter of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The Walkmen have a new video out for "While I Shovel The Snow," one of my favorite songs from 2010. The video is nice and simple with shots of the band in the snow - fitting.

I also noticed that the band is selling current album Lisbon and the previous one You and Me for $7.99 a pop. Pretty good deal, but it seems to me more bands should directly sell their albums from their websites at a cheaper price and get more money directly.
I'm sure it's all a licensing and merchandising deal. However I know that I have not bought whole albums I want because I see them priced at 7.99 for an mp3 download, and the reverse of that I have bought whole albums from bands that maybe I'm unsure about or on the fence because they were priced at 5.99 or less.

The Low Anthem - Ghost Women Blues from slowcoustic
I am very excited about the release of this album, because I was such a fan of Oh My God Charlie Darwin.This tracks follows the same formula from that album; slow building melodies with a folk tinge. A sweet Oboe (I think) solo to top it off.

A little bit of a change in sound from The Ravonettes. Still has that surf guitar but they have lost the back beat garage drums. A softer gentler Raveonettes, which hopefully translates to a great new album.

The Lovely Eggs - Have You Ever Heard a Digital Accordion from Swill Merchant
Discovered these guys through NPR - All Songs Considered. They love to write a song in rounds and some people find the singers voice and their music utterly annoying, but that is what I find charming. The video below is Don't Look at Me which is from their most recent album and Digital Accordion (above) is  from their previous effort If You Were Fruit.
