Youtube is the new MTV (and other stuff) #2 2011

I haven't proofed this because my lacrosse team just won a big game and don't have time, but I have had these videos sitting around waiting to go out. Enjoy.

Beyonce - Who Run the World live at the Billboard awards 2011
Some very cool video screen work and such on this tribute/performance from Beyonce and the song has a Major Lazer sample. The music actually starts at about 3:00 min.

Bon Iver - I Can't Make You Love Me (Bonnie Raitt cover) from Jimmy Fallon
I've already posted this, but it is worth a second. His voice is so usual and powerful. Every time I hear it I sit up and take notice. He has great dynamics on the loud/soft.

Yeasayer - Devil and the Deed live on Conan 5/23/2011
new track with that same funky electronic hippie sound.

Youtube is the new MTV (and other stuff)

The Antlers w/ Neon Indian - Rolled Together (live for Pitchfork) from Pitchfork
Hearing and seeing this track on Pitchfork is really what made me want to seek out other live performances from artists. I don't get to many concerts so thank god for youtube, pitchfork, and the like. Thanks Pitchfork!

The Vaccines - Blow It Up (Later Live with Jools Holland) from Youtube
I'm a sucker for the hype surrounding this band. Can't wait for the US release of this album so I can stop cheating them out of their money by searching out poor quality downloads.

Beach House - Untitled (New song live at ATP 2011) from youtube
Sounds like they have picked up right where they left off with Teen Dream. I'm sure we still have some time till a new album arrives but glad to see they are in tip top shape.

tUnE-yArDs - You Yes You from Pitchfork
I'm sure I am a pig because I find the mustache distracting during the interview, but once the music starts that all fades. The effects pedal work with the drums and loops is cool and the rhythm of the song is boss.

Fleet Foxes - Sim Sala Bim (live on Jimmy Fallon 5/20/2011) from Audio Perv
If you made it this far you are in for a treat - so soothing to start and so rocking to end. AWESOME!

Saturday Morning Videos #1 2011

I miss when I was in middle/high school, before I could drive, staying up late watching Friday Night videos. I didn't have the luxury of cable TV and MTV till I was a Junior in high school so I had to rely on that show (along with visit to my best friends house) to get my fix of music cool once a week. I also really enjoyed Saturday morning cartoons when I was little, having recently seen an old episode of Super Friends I realize I'm not missing anything just being nostalgic. Most of those old cartoons sucked compared to what is on offer today. In an effort to bring the two together I offer you Saturday morning videos.

The Vaccines - All In White source Someone To Shout For
Sounding like a great album. NSFW because of some quick boob shots.

Panda Bear - Alsatian Darn source Pitchfork
Trippy like one of those 3D posters

James Blake - Lindisfarne source Pitchfork
Your guess is as good as mine, I just like the music.

Little Scream - Red Hunting Jacket source Gorilla Vs Bear
Cool paper cut outs.

Red Hunting Jacket by Little Scream from Secretly Jag on Vimeo.

Cults - Abducted source Youtube
Following the song title we get a weird version of kidnapping? Creepy

YATCH - Summer Song source Pitchfork
On a lighter note - throwback to the 80's.

Come On Baby Cover Me #3 2011

Getting 6 tracks on this edition because the last one is not really a cover as much as a remix/remake. I absolutely love Thao and Mirah and Ben Folds is a master of covers and 99 problems as a down home romp - brilliant. Enjoy them all.

Thao and Mirah - Love Is a Battlefield (Pat Benatar) source Chrome Waves
Sexy and bumping

Ben Folds - Sleazy (Kei$ha) source Unnecessary Umlaut

the Black Lips - Dearest (Buddy Holly) source Unnecessary Umlaut

Higo - 99 Problems (Jay-z) source Indie Sabbath

Ty Segall - Salamanda Palaganda (T. Rex) source Everybody Taste

The Very Best - I Can Change (LCD Soundsystem) source SFL

Cheat Sheet #16 2011

This week of music just seems to be something special. Released this week: The Antlers, Okkervil River, Lonely Island and lots of the music below. Maybe it is because I have a couple beers and haven't written in a long time but everything below is awesome. If you are stopping by to get some free music, don't be afraid to follow.

Memory Tapes - Wait In the Dark source Music Ninja
Memory Tapes - Today Is Our Life source Turntable Kitchen
This is soft, pretty, gentle music; easy to listen to. Don't think this will win album of the year, but I do think it will be great to hear while hanging out on the patio or deck this summer.
Album Player Piano out on July 5
Band Website

Gang Gang Dance -Mindkilla source Salad Days Music
Making funky experimental electronic music like it should be made. They got synths, midis, distorted guitars, drums, and lovely vocals. All hands on deck as there is lots of knob turning. I can remember when I thought electronic music was some how cheating - I'm retarded. It's all music, you just have to do what sounds good. This is like dirty hippie music for the electronic age.Great jam below to go with the mp3.
Album Eye Contact out now
Band Website

Ema - The Grey Ship source Wheels Still Spin
Ema - Milkman source My Old Kentucky Blog
This is ear burning and brain melting music. The droning noise is very displacing and matches the lyrics perfectly. It is hard to listen to this at full volume, but I highly recommend. EMA seems to be genius. Apparently she has been honing her craft in earlier bands Amps For Christ and Gowns.Looks like I'll be busy this week checking them out. Amazon has her new album for $5.99 get it now.
Past Life Martyred Saints out now
Band Website

Battles - Ice Cream source My Blog Cliche
I love the Battles and when I heard front man Tyondai Braxton left to pursue his solo projects I thought there is no way they could survive. I was wrong - this is great. The album will include rotating guest vocals including the likes of Gary Numan (Cars - see below). Saucy video to boot, but I prefer mint chocolate chip.
New album Gloss Drop out on June 7
Band Website

Video: Death Cab For Cutie - Home Is A Fire

A good song but I really like the video.Nothing earth shattering but some cool camera work on a city scape. Video is directed by Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the Barack Obama Hope posters.

The music sounds like what you expect from Death Cab, heart-felt sentimental adult alternative.

New Death Cab album Codes and Keys is available on May 31st.

Cheat Sheet #15 2011

A diverse collection of music here; some big production classic rock, lo-fi blues, hardcore indie, and electronic music. There must be something here you like, but probably also some things you hate. Dive in!

My Morning Jacket - Holdin On to Black Metal source Oh My Rock
The new My Morning Jacket is lining up to be a classic. This track is big sounding .
Album Circuital out May 31st
Band Website
Thee Oh Sees - I Need Seed source Austin Town Hall
Great little romping track that stomps along. Don't take then to seriously just enjoy their unique sound.
New album Castlemainia is out on June 14
Band website

F**ked Up - Queen of Hearts source Write Click Cook Listen
F**ked Up - A Little Death source
Have never liked this band and still find the screaming vocals a big question mark ( I feel the same way about Henry Rollins and most Hardcore), bur for this track it works and I'm willing to give the whole album a try. Queen of Hearts has a great balance with some soft female vocals. The whole album is suppose to be a rock opera (think Green Days
Album David Comes to Life out on June 7
Band Website
Link to old track Year of the Ox from sirus radio live session

Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed source Gimmie Tinnitus
The name of the band describes them well. This is electronic pop that sounds dreamy and distance. Lots going on in the mix but nothing seems to dominate the sound for long.
Album Within and Without out July 12
Band Website

Remix Central

Two great remixs have recently hit the streets. Make sure to give them a shot, both are cool in the their own way and both tracks come to you courtesy of Pitchfork. One thing to point out is that both of these original albums (The XX - XX and Ariels Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today) have aged very well. I find them more exciting to listen to now then when they first came out, and I was a fan of both upon their release. If you never gave either of these albums a shot the first time around, make sure to try again right now!

The XX - VCR (Remixed by Hood Internet feat. Freddie Gibbs, Elizabeth Harper, and Telli)

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Friday Night (Nevermore) (Remixed by Dam-Funk)

Cheat Sheet #14 2011

Nothing this week really knocked my socks off, but everything listed here is on my spring play list and getting multiple plays. No big super stars but lots of up and coming artists. The Black Lips are the only band I have real prior experience with - lets hope all these bands below have great years.

The Golden Dogs - Cheap Umbrellas source Indie Rock Cafe
Virtual unknown band from Toronto that I stumbled upon thanks to IRC. Really like the lo-fi grumbly rock sound. I think of Guided By Voices and Pavement with a female singer.  Hope this guys get more publicty.
New album Coat Of Arms is available now
Band Website

Seapony - Blue Star source Gorilla Vs Bear
No new ground being covered here: distorted background guitars, picked surf guitar, and pleasant sounding female vocals. This could be the beach fossils with a female singer, not surprising that the two bands are friendly. Summer is almost here and all the songs are lining up to get noticed.
New album Go With Me is out May 31
Band Website

Black Lips - Modern Art source Music That Isn't Bad
A great bluesy punk band that make thumping driving music. I don't think this album breaks any new ground, but if you dig the sound check out all their previous albums. They are consistently good.
New album Arabia Mountain out June 7
Band Website

Thao and Mirah - Folks source Ground Control
Two talented female voices and songwriters have joined forces to create this simple, but very effecting folk music. Got the whole album and I really enjoy it. I like the build of the horns on this track.
Thao's Website
Mirah's Website
Self Titled album out now

Tom Vek - A Chore source Popop
Electroclash rock from much anticipated London cool guy. It's been six years since any new music has been put out by Vek. The long wait might produce unreasonable expectations but this sounds nice. A little tongue in cheek video to go with the track.
New album Leisure Seizure out June 6

Video: Art Brut - Lost Weekend

There was a time when I thought Art Brut would change the future of Rock N Roll, now I am just hoping for good time rock-n-roll album. The first single and new video seem to be a beacon of light.
