TJI: Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler /The Dream

Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler
Thee Oh Sees - The Dream
The second release of the year for this San Fransisco band. What was a nice side project of John Dwyer's (The Coachwhips) has developed into full blown band. The last album Castlemainia had a cool ramshackle garage sound; this latest release is even cooler, still ramshackle, and still garage. Some of the songs are silly but the whole album shows a real passion for making a joyful noise.

TJI: Summer Camp

Summer Camp- Better Off Without You
Summer Camp - I Want You

I'm very frustrated by the inability to insert YouTube video into these posts using the iPad. There are some great videos to go with this band, but you will have to search them out yourself. This is a strong pop album and is easy to enjoy with just one listen. Upbeat and peppy even when it is talking about break-ups and heartbreak. The draw back is this album should have come out in June so we could enjoy it all summer long. We'll see if the album has staying power or if it is so bright that it burns out quickly.

TJI: Cass McCombs

Cass McCombs - The Same Thing

I've tried posting this review three times now, but have had so many problems with blogpress and blogger on the IPad that it hasn't happened till now. This album would fit in great with the alt country of the 90's. This is Cass's second release (Wits End was the first) of the year and I wonder if he would have been better served making one great release instead of two good ones. Don't know the whole story but I guess it possible that the inspiration for these songs came after the first release. There are some great tracks here, like Same Thing which is posted above but also a few boring tracks. I would recommend downloading parts of each album and you'll be good to go.

Very frustrated with the bloggings apps on IPad and with Blogger itself for not having an app. Seems like the IPad would be the ultimate in blogging given that it is small, portable, and easy to access, but that is not the case. Someone needs to get on the ball and start designing, until then my posting will be limited. Boo hoo.

TJI: Nurses

Nurses - Trying to Reach You
Nurses - Fever Dreams

I love the psychedelic garage music coming out of this Portland band. There is a kaleidoscope of sounds and layers. The lead singer has a weird voice that some how remains interesting and not annoying. Not a bad song on the album, Trying to Reach You and Fever Dreams will give you a taste. If you like it, get the whole meal.

TJI: Real Estate

Real Estate - It's Real
Real Estate - Green Aisles
This is jangly guitar pop that is easy to listen to. There is nothing grating or confusing about the sound. The album is well recorded and it has a simple and dreamy sound that lends itself to listening while driving. The first single It's Real is one of the best tracks from the month of October.

TJI: Phantogram

Phantogram - Don't Move
Phantogram - 16 Years

Pleasant sound. Nice soft vocals (female and male), cool synths, beats, and sweet looping effects. The earth didn't shake when I listened to this album but I did listen till the end, which says something. Nightlife is a long EP at 7 tracks, but seems like the perfect length for an attention span these days. Don't Move is easily my favorite track, followed by Turning Into Stone.

Radiohead on SNL

I never fully embraced the Radiohead album from this year (King of Limbs). I listened and liked it but it never buried itself into my core the way Ok Computer, Kid A, or In Rainbows did. However watching the performance of Lotus Flower I am forced to go back and dig deeper. King of Limbs will now be on repeat this week, I will be drinking the Radiohead Kool-Aid.

Late Night Viewing Sept. 19 - 23

A busy week on late night TV. You will need to set aside some time to see all the big performances. Would be even more, but I couldn't find Elbow on Fallon or Death Can for Cutie on Carson Daly. Performance of the week goes to Clap Your Hands, just edging out Wilco. Ready to hear arguments to the contrary.

Coldplay - Paradise on Letterman Tuesday Sept. 20
New track sounds like Coldplay, sounds good.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Same Mistake on Fallon Tuesday Sept. 20
The album is getting average reviews, but I really like it. Sure this sounds like "Country Yellow Teeth," but that was a great song.

The Decemberists - Calamity Song live for Carson Daly show Tuesday Sept. 20
Really a concert performance. The sound isn't great, but the song is.

Wilco - Born Alone on Letterman Wednesday Sept. 21
Can't wait for the album!

The Kooks - Junk of the Heart on Leno Wednesday Sept. 21
????

Telekinesis - Please Ask For Help on Fallon Thursday Sept. 22
A great to buy if you don't own it yet.

The Jayhawks - She Walks In So Many Ways on Letterman Friday Sept. 23

Cheat Sheet #23 2011

Not a lot of explanation this week, but lots of music. Been gone at the beach and now heading out to Disney - Boss! Most of these tracks are older (2 weeks) but all are still worth a listen. Also seems to be a very subdued overall sound - I guess summer is coming to an end and we are getting ready for the cold days ahead. My wife thinks it is going to be an early fall.

Hooded Fang - Den of Love
Canucks with a nice little sound, has that 60's slow dance guitar to kick it off.

Cheat Sheet #22 2011

Tons of new stuff coming at me everyday. I have had no time to absorb any music, just a couple listens and its on to the next thing. We just got a DVD player for the van, so my driving and music listening has come to an end. My drives are now sound-tracked by Little Einsteins! Hope you like all the tracks this week.

Fungi Girls - Velvet Days source Guerolito Music
Garage music sounds great in the summer. I was listening to The Strangeboys a lot last week and now I find this gem of a band. You can hear another new track from the album by heading over to their Bandcamp page.
New album Some Easy Magic is out next week.

Black Whales - Shangri-La Indeed source Ear Milk

Basic but solid rock music. Has that 90's alt-country sound and it works nicely. Nothing that blows me away, but will be a nice addition to the summer soundtrack.
Album Shangri-La Indeed is out now.

Neon Indian - Fallout source Tympanogram
I was surprised when I gave this a play and was reminded of My Bloody Valentine, not what I was expecting. This new track still has the Chillwave sound you expect from Neon Indian but is darker and murkier. This early track will bring high expectations for the album.
Album Era Extrana is due out Sept. 13

Best of the 2nd Quarter 2011 April -> June

Over halfway through 2011 and with the summer here I have had a little more time focus on music. April and May brought lots of great music and lots of new discoveries. That is always a busy music time of year as many bands like to follow up with new albums and tracks after SXSW. June was a little disappointing (or maybe I am just spending too much time stuck on Bon Iver) and July so far has been dry. Enjoy and let me know what your favorites were.

Video: Pains of Being Pure of Heart - The Body

Not my favorite track but good enough for summer. The video is preparation for my beach trip in August!

And Other Stuff #5

So before I die, I have three concert dreams:
1. Latitude in England with my whole family
2. SXSW with my wife and the Berciks
3. Primavera and Spain sightseeing with whoever will take me for free.

So this week we get some very cool footage from Spain thanks to Pitchfork attending the Primavera festival.
tUnE-yArDs in Spain
The tUnE-yArDs short song is just surreal with the church, traffic, and soccer crazies.

James Blake @ Primevera Concert in Spain
So I learned that this music is part of his degree for University...how cool.

Cults @ Primevera
Sightseeing and drinking

On top of all the concert and live music footage - Pitchfork also introduced a great new idea: 60 Seconds Left. Check out these bands to get an idea of what it is all about.
The Walkmen - remind me a wrestling a friend of highschool and then suddenly someone gets mad and it gets real.

Battles - funny band, funny cameraman.

Pains of Being Pure of Heart
- an indie football fan.

So leave a comment on what your concert dreams are!

Cheat Sheet #21 2011

Sorry if this starts a little downbeat for you. I know it is summer, but these are the new tracks that are striking me just right and I also find happiness in sad music. My wife says that makes me weird, she is probably right (but I know there are others of you out there). If you don't want to hear the miserable tunes just skip forward to Santa Fe by Beirut.

John Maus - Hey Moon source Ear Milk
John Maus - Quantum Leap source Mr Bungle
John Maus - Believer source One Track Mind
The influences here are obvious so I'll skip that. You should also skip this if synthesizers and drum machines bother you. These tracks seem very different to me, but all of them work. "Hey Moon" to me is just beautiful (lyrics rarely matter, but here they hit me just right) the two other tracks are a weird kind of fun listen.
Band Website
We Become the Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves is out now

Beirut - Goshen source Seamstress For The Band
Beirut - Santa Fe source Seizure Chicken
Lining up to be a year end favorite. In the past Beirut has never hit the mark with me. I think the sound was too eclectic and bounced all over the place. All the tracks I have heard from this new album seem gentler and well thought out.
Band Website
New album The Rip Tide out on August 30

Wu Lyf - Dirt source Mostly Junk Food
Wu Lyf - Heavy Pop source Heart Strings Engaged
Grand atmospheric sounding music. Reminds me of the Foals last album with guttural vocals. I have no clue what the lead singer is saying (it is English) but I know he is feeling it and as a result so am I. The music clearly sounds like a call to arms for someone, for me it just beckons to be played loud while I'm cleaning the house.
Band Website
Album Go Tell Fire Mountain is out now

Teddybears - Crystal Meth Christian (Featuring the Flaming Lips) source Unstrum
Teddy Bears - No More Michael Jackson source Magnet
A grab bag of sounds and styles but all of it up-beat. This is tongue in cheek electronic pop music from three Sweedish dudes who used to make heavy grindcore music. The album contains guest appearances all of the place from the likes of Flaming Lips, Cee-Lo, B-52s, Robyn, and B.O.B. It is possible this music is too happy for me.
Band Website
Album Devil's Music came out on July 5th

Video: Beach Fossils - Adversity

The Beach Fossils put out an EP back on Jan. 1 of 2011 and the whole thing just slipped by me. I found a couple tracks like Calyer online but somehow never realized that they had 8 new tracks on this EP What A Pleasure, but now it is summer. Dusting off all the summer music I came across this video, which lead to the EP. Sounds like a sunny day at the beach. The song is called Adversity, but it is so easy to listen to.

Late Night Viewing

An attempt at a new and useful segment, hosting what I consider to be the best live performances from late night TV and the such. Late night TV is one of the few places you can see new and up coming bands along with some of the old standards of rock. Since I'm in the married with children category this is one of the only options I have for seeing what a group is like. Its no where close to the experience of a concert but at least it gives me a taste. There is a lot to get through here but leave a comment with what is your favorite from the week.

Eddie Vedder - Without You (Letterman 6/20/11)
Still has a great voice. He has carved a niche for himself making ukulele music. I don't see any current competition there.

Bon Iver - Holocene (Fallon 6/21/11)

Beautiful as always.

Raphael Saadiq - Day Dream (Leno 6/22/11)

I can understand why this is popular.

Noah and the Whale - Life Goes On (Letterman 6/23/11 US TV debut)
Good performance but a couple critiques; even more nasally then the record and seems to lack energy.

The Antlers - Every night My Teeth Are Falling Out (Leno 6/23/11)

Sounds strong, and he is really feeling it. Ends with a great chaotic sound and they get to shake hands with Justin Timberlake!

Thurston Moore - Blood Never Lies (Fallon 6/23/11)

Very different. Reminds me of an acoustic version of this old DC band called TONE.

My Morning Jacket - Holdin' On to Black Metal (Conan 6/23/11)
Horns, a chorus, and an intense guitar solo bad A.

Archers of Loaf - Harnessed In Slums (Fallon 6/24/2011)
TV Debut from this old school indie band.

Video: Yacht - Utopia/Dystopia

This is funky! This is far out! Putting these two tracks together is sweet. The new album Shangri-La is out this week exclusively on I-tunes and on June 28th is it avalaible everywhere else. I just have a couple days to wait. A great video for a cool sounding album:

RIP Clarence Clemens

Bruce Springsteen (Clarence Clemens)- Sherry Darlin' (Live from '80s)
I'm not a real big Bruce fan, but this video shows the power of the man and his band live. Clarence Clemens could blow a mean sax and was an awesome performer. RIP.

Bruce Springsteen - Tenth Avenue Freeze Out (Live '93)
Dicey camera work but good sound

A great week for videos. Every one of these tracks will be played all summer long (and most I have posted previously), this is the greatest video post ever! Thanks to Pitchfork for the hook-up.

Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues source Youtube
This is not an official video, but I've been listening to this song so often it needs to be recognized. Song of the summer!

Bright Eyes - Jejune Stars source Pitchfork
Straight forward performance video that is ok, but I think this is a great song.

Bon Iver - Calgary source Pitchfork
Out of the sidehatch, feel free to leave comments about the meaning of this video. It is beyond my capabilities.

Antlers - Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out source Pitchfork
Drink more milk and some weird stuff - a little creepy.

Crystal Stilts - Shake The Shackles source Pitchfork

And Other Stuff #3

Battles - Wall Street source Blogotheque
How cool is the room they are playing in. Some tasty high hat.

Oh Land - Wolf and I from youtube
I highly recomend the new album!

The Black Lips - Live at Webster Hall source Pitchfork
This clip made me realize how awesome this band is! Now I just need to find a way to see them in concert.

My Morning Jacket - Circuital source Paste Magazine
Great classic rock sound

Coldplay - Charlie Brown source Someone To Shout For
Click the link to Someone To Shout For to hear three other new Coldplay tracks. For fans this sounds like it is going to be a great new album, for non-fans I'm sure it sounds lame. I'm looking forward to this one.

Come On Baby Cover Me #4 2011

Some electrorock, country/bluegrass, and some straight forward covers - all eclectic and all good. My favorite is Coma Cinema covering one of my all time favorites. The last one is for my friend Steve who loves Matt and Kim and rap, not a true cover but it's cool.

Julian Casablances - Rave On (Buddy Holly) source Tale of the Tape

Coma Cinema - I Wanna Be Adored (Stone Roses) source We are the Mascotte

Nickel Creek - Spit On A Stranger (Pavement) source Tsuraradio

Weezer - Paranoid Android (Radiohead) source Mayor Marwan

Chiddy Bang - Cameras (Matt and Kin) source Eavesdrop

Saturday Morning Videos #3 2011

Justice - Civilization source Youtube
This will getting you going this morning. Cool song and epic video.

The National - Think You Can Wait source Youtube
As my friend Jeff put it, "another up-beat summer sounding tune from the happiest band I know." Even in the summer I love a great sad song.

Best Coast - Gone Again source Gorilla Vs Bear
Not their greatest song but a cool revenge video. I wish I could have gummy worms shot at me.

Modern Tapes - Caroline source ATG
For those about to rock:

Hot Bodies in Motion - Old Habits from Zeek Earl on Vimeo.

Bell and Sebastian - Come On Sister from Pitchfork
This is the new single from the album Write About Love.

Belle and Sebastion - I Want the World To Stop source Youtube
The last song reminded me how great the first single from the album was - enjoy.

Bon Iver - Listen Now

If you haven't found the link already via a thousand other sites then check out the new Bon Iver album below. One listen is all it takes to recognize its power.

Cheat Sheet #17 2011

I have had these tracks sitting in holding for over a week, been so busy with lacrosse that I just never published them to the blog page. Now lacrosse has ended - boo hoo - so more regular posting.

Bon Iver - Calgary source Tsururadio
Bon Iver - Michicant source WATM
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The first two tracks of the new album sound stunning. It is obvious there is more production and more tricks used in the recording this time around, but the songs are still lush and personal. So happy my friend Brad got me tickets to see him in concert! Great Bonnie Raitt cover from Fallon below.

The Horrors - Still Life source Musique
Glad to see they are staying on the New Order/ Joy Division sound wave. It does start to drag, wish it would have ended about 4:00 minutes.
New album Skying is due out on July 26

Arcade Fire - Speaking In Tongues source Old School
Arcade Fire - Culture War source Old School
Hard to say how I feel about the quick re-release of The Suburbs. I'm sure I'll buy it, but it seems a little cheap of to me to push this out so quickly after the original release. Both new tracks sound good and I think they fit in nicely with the feel of the whole album - I really like "Speaking In Tongues," but it certainly isn't breaking any new ground.
The deluxe edition of The Suburbs will be available on Aug. 2

Cults - Make Time source Tale of the Tape
I just posted two other tracks by this band in CS #12 but couldn't resist another. This highly anticipated is getting lots of hype and seems the band and album will live up to it. Love the vocals and 60's pop sound. You should get your hands on everything you can find.
the self titled album is set to come out on June 7
